At the temple there were these structures lined with drawers. From watching a group of girls, my friend Ou figured out that after depositing 1000 yen (about $1) you had to shake this metal container until a long stick fell out. The stick had a number on it that corresponded with a drawer. Inside the drawer a piece of paper held a fortune, which Ou reassured me was accurate and would come true.
